The Brief
Objective
World Horse Racing approached Agility Films to create three different films, ‘What it means to win the Irish Derby’, a compelling documentary film that would encapsulate the excitement, tradition, and high stakes of The Irish Derby. The objective was to deliver an immersive viewing experience that highlights the elite competition, the vibrant atmosphere, and the rich heritage of this iconic event, appealing to horse racing enthusiasts globally.
‘Johnny Murtagh’s Irish Derby Glory’ celebrates the career of Johnny Murtagh, a renowned jockey and horse trainer. The objective was to highlight his numerous achievements, focusing particularly on his victories in the Irish Derby.
And ‘Next In Line – The O’Brien Dynasty’, a documentary about Donnacha O’Brien, an Irish racehorse trainer and former two-time Irish Champion Jockey, the son of world renowned and multiple champion trainer Aidan O’Brien and brother of former jockey and trainer Joseph O’Brien.
The Film
Our production team set out to document ‘The Irish Derby’ with a focus on delivering high-quality, cinematic visuals and engaging storytelling. Over the course of the event, we captured the intensity of the races, the elegance of the participants, and the enthusiasm of the crowd. The resulting film not only showcased the thrilling moments of the races but also provided viewers with an inside look at the preparation, strategy, and dedication of the jockeys and trainers involved. The film successfully portrayed the essence of The Irish Derby, blending fast-paced action with heartfelt narratives.
For ‘Next In Line – The O’Brien Dynasty’, We asked Donnacha to relive his famous Irish Derby victory aboard Latrobe and find out how it felt to provide his brother, Joseph, with his first Irish Derby win whilst, beating Dad, Aidan. Setting the scene in the comfort of his office at his stables in Co. Tipperary, Ireland on a dark rainy day, we ensured the lighting brought warmth and b-roll was captured to support the story which can be hard to relive some years later.
Then for ‘Johnny Murtagh’s Irish Derby Glory’, we combined interviews, race footage, and behind-the-scenes glimpses to paint a vivid picture of Murtagh’s impact on the sport and his journey to becoming one of Ireland’s most celebrated figures in horse racing.
